BrainMD+ Mental Health App by Dr. Daniel Amen

How we helped Amen Clinics by Dr. Daniel Amen, a five-time New York Times best-selling author & distinguished doctor, debug and rebuild an old mental health app by developing the mobile platform architecture from scratch for BrainMD

BACKGROUND

About BrainMD+ by Dr. Daniel Amen

Amen Clinics focuses on brain health and mental healthcare, offering comprehensive evaluations, brain SPECT imaging, and personalized treatment plans. They specialize in diagnosing and treating various conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and traumatic brain injuries.

The clinics use a brain-based approach that goes beyond traditional psychiatry, integrating biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors to provide holistic care. They also offer telehealth, psychotherapy, and various innovative therapies to support mental health and well-being.

Established in 1989 by Daniel G. Amen, M.D., the center has a national reputation for utilizing brain SPECT imaging for a wide variety of neuropsychiatric problems, including ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, autism spectrum disorders, and memory problems.

Dr. Amen’s team reached out to Riseapps and quoted to re-develop the existing mobile application with a new architecture, infrastructure, and features.

Solutions

Solutions we delivered

User Registration & Onboarding
To start with, patients need to fill in their data so that ObGyn experts know more about their healthcare background in advance.

That’s why Riseapps helped implement an easy sign-up/in process leaving no room for missing data, untracked visits, lack of appointment history, and having a “one-stop shop” solution at patients’ fingertips.
Profile Management
Since the app functionality is now divided into therapists and patients, the first is getting lots of management features within a brand-new application.

Doctors can now edit their personal & professional information, background, appointment availability, prime time and OOO hours, etc.

This now helps both patients and therapists connect efficiently with automated flows.
Personalized Assessments
Before diving into peer-to-peer appointments and consultations, patients now get a new feature of detailed and gamified self-assessment.

Conduct comprehensive cognitive assessments to evaluate the user’s current cognitive abilities.
Generate customized reports based on assessment results to identify areas for improvement.
Adapt assessments over time to track progress and update the user’s coaching plan accordingly.
Daily Check-ins
Once a patient gets a therapy or treatment plan, they are now able to mark and track daily progress right in the app.

Daily Journals now assist users in filling in multiple data like feelings, happiness, questions, mental sharp state, sleep reports, etc.

This helps both patients and doctors monitor therapy plan results in real-time & make adjustments on the go.
Appointment Booking & Telehealth
Appointment booking is a must-have telehealth feature for B2C eHealth products this year.

Since therapists now manage their availability, patients can precisely pick the time slots that work best for both.

It takes several steps for patients to fill in the data, select the time, and attend the appointment via video conferencing.
Real-Time Chatting
Once doctors and patients meet on an appointment, patients can ask their questions, request assistance, and access quick help from their therapists in real-time.

Live chatting is the second vital feature for patient-centric digital health apps since it grows patient engagement, and retention, and boosts therapy results with agile treatment adjustments.

That’s why we implemented the chatting functionality to let patients real-time access to assistance and care.
Patient Dashboard & Info
Similar to doctors, patients need to monitor their metrics, lessons, upcoming appointments, gamified therapies, and progress in one place.

That’s why we implemented informative dashboards for patients so they could mark and monitor their mental health activities along with managing their personal profiles and settings.
Admin Dashboard
App admins are the 3rd party within an application that tracks high-level business metrics and monitors patients, therapists, most popular in-app tools, and subscription-related information.

Admin dashboards are vital features for 99% of eHealth products as the C-level, marketing, and sales teams should keep track of the core metrics to roll out new in-demand features, adjust sales funnels, etc.
Meditations
Since meditations and affirmations are the cornerstones of most mental therapies, we implemented this feature right in the app.

Now patients can access and update their meditation playlist and even listen to any song while completing their lessons or navigating through the app.
Brain Health Assessment
Brain health assessment is the core gamified flow of MD Brain which helps patients analyze their brain type, and get recommendations on supplements, tools, and challenges to complete in one place and autonomously.

This helps avoid long offline visits to doctors that take an hour to assess a patient’s mental health.

What’s more, doctors then had to process that data and manually come up with recommendations that is now fully automated in one place.
Coaching Programs & Tools
Since mental health is about completing multiple activities and gamified flows, they take hours or weeks offline to complete and generate results.

That’s why we implemented automated gamified coaching programs and tools that help patients get through their therapies in an engaging and self-managed way.

If they need help from a coach, patients can access real-time chatting or hop off on a quick call with their doctor virtually.
Performance Tracking and Reporting
Since both patients and doctors need to monitor therapy and treatment results, we implemented performance tracking and reporting features for both app parties.

Now patients can monitor their completed lessons, make daily journal retrospectives, analyze brain health improvements, and more.

Doctors in turn can track the number of completed appointments, live patients throughout their therapy stages, and even access users’ assessment results to make adjustments in the treatment plans.
Gamification and Engagement
Gamification is the way to keep your users engaged and retained throughout their journey map.

Whether you’re about to build a mental health, meditation, sleep log, or women’s health app, gamification is a must to acquire users and survive in a highly competitive market.

That’s why we incorporated gamified workflows for onboarding, tools, lessons, and other in-app activities.
Cognitive Health Education
MD Brain is not only about treatment, but education as well.

Since cognitive health is among the therapy cornerstones, we implemented multiple in-app games and tools.

They now help patients perform self-education and self-discovery so they better understand how their consciousness works in different scenarios to control and improve.
Reminders and Notifications
Reminders and Notifications

B2C apps are about high engagement and retention through push notifications and reminders.

Since MD Brain is a multi-component mental health hub, patients can’t keep every activity in mind which made us implement notifications & reminders.

They now help users to fill in daily journals, complete check-ins on time, and not forget about their daily to-do lists.
